From the earth

Human intervention has transformed natural resources like clay, stone and marble into materials we can build with and make into intricate artworks. Extracting these from the earth is usually labour-intensive and can have a detrimental environmental impact.

The most challenging materials to quarry and carve have often become symbols of wealth and prestige, like these porphyry stone objects. Porphyry was originally only mined in one location in Egypt, adding to its perception as a luxury.
