Designing for exhibitions

Exhibitions give the V&A the opportunity to stage the collection in new ways. The museum commissioned this dress for the 2021 exhibition 'Bags: Inside Out'. The dress was reproduced to reveal the inner structure of a mantua gown, a formal style popular in the 1720s and ’30s.

Pockets would have been attached to a tape tied around the waist and accessed through openings in the gown and petticoat seams. This dress reconstruction meant we could see and display a pair of internal tie-on pockets as they would have been worn at the time.
